2026 Month 8 (August) Guided Exhibition Tours at the Yongsan Urban Memory Museum The Yongsan Urban Memory Museum presents a journey through Yongsan's history: from Yongsan as a place where people lived during the Joseon Dynasty, through the birth of the new area known as ‘Sin-Yongsan’ following the arrival of railroads as a product of modernization, and the rapid urban development of the 1960s and ’70s during reconstruction after the 6·25 Korean War, to Yongsan's aspirations to emerge as an international city. Visitors are invited to discover how the urban space of Yongsan has been documented and what memories it may hold as a city in the future. Select a block and place it on the reader to view information about that area. - Yongsan City: Forest of Memory The Forest of Memory media sculpture combines nine media poles with stainless-steel mirrors. The sculpture's overall form was inspired by the rooftop watchtower of the former Namildang building. It was planned and designed in the hope that reflecting one another's images would provide an opportunity to build a healthy city. Memory Room - Yongsan amid Waves of Change: A Look at Yongsan in the 1960s and ’70s Seoul's population rose from two million (200 in units of ten thousand) in 1959 to more than eight million (800 in units of ten thousand) in 1979, making the 1960s and ’70s a period when population growth outpaced economic growth. As the population surged in a short time, problems such as housing shortages, traffic congestion, and environmental pollution emerged throughout Seoul, making the expansion of urban infrastructure and environmental improvements urgent priorities. Urban renewal and residential-environment improvement projects undertaken during this period, including the Comprehensive Han River Development Plan and the construction of the road covering Manchocheon Stream, became closely linked to the direction of Yongsan's subsequent development. This special exhibition highlights Yongsan's development in the 1960s and ’70s, as well as the Yongsan U.S. military garrison, which coexisted as a distinctive space within Seoul. - Yongsan Tragedy Memorial Hall A city inhabited by countless people is filled with many different forms of expression. At times, when those expressions become excessive, they can lead to extreme conflict and even destroy the lives of others. One such case was the ‘January (Month 1) 2009 Yongsan Tragedy (Memory and Reflection).’ Records Room - Yongsan Park Communication Spaces This space introduces the Yongsan Park Gallery at Camp Kim and the Yongsan Park Platform at Noksapyeong Station, while presenting Yongsan's urban landscape. - Yongsan Urban Archive This reading-room-style archive and seminar room offers free access to overseas records concerning the Yongsan military post and Yongsan Garrison (materials collected by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and experts), as well as a variety of books and other resources. ※ General admission to the museum is available on-site without advance reservations. ☞ Guided Exhibition Tour Reservations ○ Eligibility: Elementary school students and older (children and older adults must be accompanied by a guardian) ○ Tour capacity: 15 people per session *For group tours, please contact the museum.
